All the engines in this year's engine challenge impressed us with stout power numbers, with most easily breaking hp. These engine builders impressed us not only with the horsepower and torque their engines made, but also with the reliability of their motors.

Both of these entries fired up and performed strongly right out of the box, and both builders handled the conditions in Comp's Memphis, Tennessee, dyno cell well, tuning their engines to more power with each pull. We'd be happy to have either of these engines in any of our cars and congratulate both HiTech Motorsport and Best Machine on their impressive showings.

Working on American iron exclusively, the crew at HiTech affectionately call their shop "the land of the misfit toys" as many high-performance cars end up at their shop after failed attempts by owners or other shops to make them run properly.

HiTech recently moved into a new 22, square-foot shop where they can better accommodate their growing customer base. The Bottom End Since the contest rules factor not only the horsepower and torque of each engine but also the price of the parts that went inside, engine builder Bart Wells knew it would take a combination of power and economy to place well in our challenge. To keep costs down, he utilized a factory block that was machined in-house to his specifications.

Because of the snug fit of the brackets to the core itself, getting these tight and aligned right took far more time than expected. Another trip to the hardware store later and our fans were secured to the brackets. Although we were replacing a factory inch radiator with an equally-sized radiator, we found some boltholes needed opening up. Factory radiators actually had opened perches on the bottom to allow for easy installation, so we took out our trusty cutting wheel and modified out Be Cool radiator likewise.

With the radiator mounted and tightened down, we reinstalled our upper and lower hoses and began wiring leaving the installation of the overflow tank for last. Prior to wiring, we double-checked all of our bolts to make sure we were nice and tight.
