Experimental studies have demonstrated that metasomatic melts can be generated by partial melting of subducted carbonate-pelitic sediments, but signatures of the involvement of such components in erupted magmas are more elusive. Our quantitative enrichment model, combined with published experimental results, allows us to estimate a resulting flux of 0. At destructive plate margins, the oceanic slab is subducted into the mantle, carrying both basaltic oceanic crust and overlying sediments.

Globally, the geochemistry of subduction-related volcanic rocks is dictated by the variable contribution of three main components e. It can be difficult to deconvolve the contributions of these different components in arc magmas, not least for subducted carbonate-rich sediments. Constraining their involvement is key to directly quantifying the origin of CO 2 emissions from volcanoes, with major consequences for atmospheric fluxes Burton et al. Yet their contribution to subduction zone magmas is not necessarily distinctive in many traditionally used geochemical tracers.

In this scenario, the contribution from BOC-derived fluids should be obscured by the sediment-melt signal, due to the greater capacity of the latter as an incompatible trace-element carrier with respect to hydrous fluids. The aim of this study was to investigate if elemental and isotopic signatures of Argentinean wheat can be used to develop a reliable fingerprint to assess its geographical provenance. The application of generalized Procrustes analysis showed To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the correspondence between soil, water, and wheat samples using different statistical methods, showing that wheat elemental and isotopic compositions are mainly related to soil and irrigation water characteristics of the site of growth.

Our main goal was to investigate if robust chemical fingerprints could be developed for three Argentinean red wines based on organic, inorganic, and isotopic patterns, in relation to the regional soil composition.

Chemometrics allowed robust differentiation between regions, wine varieties, and the same variety from different regions. Generalized Procrustes analysis GPA using two studied matrices wine and soil shows consensus between them and clear differences between studied areas. To our knowledge this is the first report combining independent variables, constructing a fingerprint including elemental composition, isotopic, and polyphenol patterns to differentiate wines, matching part of this fingerprint with the soil provenance.

The radiogenic isotopic compositions of inorganic heavy elements such as Sr, Nd, and Pb of the food chain may constitute a reliable geographic fingerprint, their isotopic ratios being inherited by the geological substratum of the territory of production.
